Growing For Good

Since 2011, we have been revolutionizing farming to ensure Canadians coast-to-coast have access to delicious, nutrient-dense greens 365 days a year – grown sustainably, safely and pesticide-free.

GOOD FOR YOU, GOOD FOR OUR PLANET

We are driven by a belief that you deserve better produce and our planet deserves a better food system.  That means produce grown close-to-home so it doesn’t lose its flavour, freshness and nutritional value in transit.  Produce that’s free of pesticides.  Produce that’s grown with less water and less land so we can continue to grow for future generations.

BETTER PRODUCE, LESS IMPACT

Our Indoor Vertical Farms optimize every aspect of the growing process from seed to harvest to give you more while taking less from our planet

GROWN IN CANADA

Did you know that up to 90% of leafy greens in Canada are imported, losing as much as 40% of their nutritional value in transit? By growing close to the communities we serve, we offer a secure supply of nutrient-dense greens that stay fresher, longer.

NO PESTICIDES

Our greens are grown free of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides – eliminating the need for chlorine baths or triple washing which can damage plants and limit shelf life.

READY TO EAT

Thanks to our controlled environment, we have no need for harmful chemicals anywhere in our process. This means you can enjoy our ready-to-eat greens, right out of the pack!

97% LESS WATER

Our farms are equipped with precision watering systems to grow our produce using 97 percent less water than traditional field farming.  In fact, our grow room recycles 95% of the water it uses, even re-capturing the condensation from inside the growing environment!

90% LESS LAND

By growing up, not out – we’re able to preserve our land for future generations, using 90% less land and producing 53x more kg of produce per square meter/year vs.  traditional open-field farming.

SAFETY

We’re proud to say our farms hold the highest level of Safe Quality Food (SQF) certification, a globally recognized gold standard for food safety and quality protocols within the industry.

our roots

From our humble beginnings in Nova Scotia, we’ve grown to become the largest vertical farming operation in North America and a global leader in controlled environment agriculture

2011

The idea to bring fresh, nutritious greens to Canada was born. Inspired by the work already underway on indoor-hydroponic farming in Japan, GoodLeaf quickly set out bringing this technology home to proactively support the health of Canadians.

2012–2014

For several years, the GoodLeaf team conducted trials to determine optimum conditions for plant growth, varieties best suited to indoor growing, and requirements to make vertical farming commercially viable.

2015

GoodLeaf constructed its first pilot farm in an old gymnasium near Truro, Nova Scotia to test commercial production and to continue research and development of new varieties and growing techniques.

2018

Development commenced on GoodLeaf's first large-scale, fully commercialized vertical farm in Guelph. The state of-the-art farm builds on the learnings from the Truro Pilot Farm while adding a level of automation not seen in vertical farming before.

2019

Our first full-scale commercial farm in Guelph, Ontario, begins supplying microgreens and baby greens to retail locations and restaurants through Ontario, becoming fully operational in 2020

2020 – 2022

Distribution expands to most major grocery stores across Ontario as demand for GoodLeaf Baby Greens and Microgreens grows.

2023 – 2024

In the fall of 2023 and winter of 2024, two new state-of-the-art farms open in Calgary, AB and Saint-Hubert, QC., each with double the capacity of our Guelph Farm. Today, GoodLeaf stands as the only vertical farming operation in Canada serving the entire country.
